To compile this ranking, our editors began with an initial pool of 85 colleges and universities. After narrowing the pool to those schools with a top 100 US News and World Report ranking and a cost per credit hour of under $400, we applied the rating and ranking methodology above. In cases of a tie, we considered the cost per credit hour and awarded the more affordable school the higher ranking.
